Transfer assets into Frec
Supported and unsupported asset types
Frec supports trading most stocks and ETFs on major US exchanges, along with many money market and mutual funds. There are no commission fees to trade, though most mutual fund trades in your self-managed portfolio carry a transaction fee. See our fee schedule for details.

Checking if a stock or ETF is supported
Enter the name of the stock, ETF, money market fund, or mutual fund in our search bar. If you're able to buy it, you'll be able to trade it on our platform.
If you initiate a partial transfer of your securities, we'll show you which ones can be transferred and flag any that aren't supported. This isn't available for a full asset transfer.
Options contracts
You can transfer options contracts into Frec. If they're uncovered, you may have margin requirements to meet, either in your Frec account or with the transferred assets. If those requirements aren't met, we may reject the transfer.
Frec's margin requirements may differ from your external broker's, so transferring may put you at a higher risk of a margin call. Learn more about margin calls.
You won't be able to trade out of any open options positions. You'll need to hold each position until expiration or assignment, or transfer the contracts out of Frec to trade elsewhere (outgoing ACAT fees may apply). These positions don't appear on Frec's holdings screen; you can only view them in monthly statements.
OTC securities
Over-the-counter (OTC) securities can be transferred into Frec but can only be held and traded in whole shares; fractional trading isn't supported. This applies regardless of company or share price, including well-known international companies that trade in the U.S. as OTC ADRs.
To sell an OTC security, provide written instructions to help@frec.com.
Penny stocks (priced under $1)
You can't sell a penny stock on Frec's platform; you'll need to provide written instructions to help@frec.com to sell it. You also won't be able to buy additional shares unless the security starts trading on a major U.S. exchange above $1.
Fixed income & mortgage-backed securities
Frec doesn't support buying or selling fixed income or mortgage-backed securities. If you transfer these in, you can hold them until maturity or transfer them to a firm that supports trading them. These assets don't appear on your holdings screen; you can only view them in monthly statements.
Foreign ordinary shares
Shares of foreign-incorporated companies that trade directly on major U.S. exchanges (not as OTC ADRs) can be transferred into Frec. Once transferred, you can deposit them into one of our MSCI indices for us to manage, or have us sell them on your behalf in whole shares. Fractional shares aren't supported, and you can't sell these directly yourself. To sell, provide written instructions to help@frec.com.
Rights & warrants
Rights and warrants can be transferred into your Frec account. Once held, they can be liquidated but not repurchased. You can only sell them by request to help@frec.com, if a secondary market exists.
Cryptocurrency
Frec doesn't support transferring, buying, or selling cryptocurrency, including direct crypto holdings or crypto wallets. These can't be linked to or held within a Frec account.
