Connect an external brokerage account to your Frec account
Before you start
- You can connect two ways: automatically with Plaid, or manually by entering your account number
- The name and account type on your outside account must exactly match your Frec account (e.g., individual → individual). This is the #1 reason transfers get rejected, so it's worth double-checking first.
- Frec never sees or stores your outside brokerage's password, it's used once, by Plaid, just to verify your account and pull your holdings
Option 1: Connect with Plaid (usually the faster path)
- Go to Transfers > Transfer assets into Frec, click Select an account, then click + Add account.
- On the Select your brokerage screen, choose outside brokerage, and then select Link with Plaid.
- Click Continue to agree to Plaid's End User Privacy Policy.
- Log in with that brokerage's username and password. This step is handled by Plaid, not Frec. We never see or keep your login information; it's only used to confirm your account number, the name on the account, and what you're holding, so we can request the transfer.
- Confirm the account you want to connect, then verify the account number (find it on a recent statement or in your brokerage's platform).
Once connected, you can choose a full transfer of assets, or select which securities and how many shares to transfer. Frec will submit the transfer request on your behalf.
Option 2: Connect manually
Use this if your brokerage isn't listed in Plaid, or you'd rather not link your login credentials.
- Go to Transfers > Transfer assets into Frec, click Select an account, then click + Add account.
- Select your brokerage from the dropdown, then choose Link with account number and then click Continue.
- Enter your account number carefully. A typo here is one of the most common causes of a delayed or cancelled transfer.
- Confirm the account type matches (for example, an individual account transferring to an individual account at Frec) and that the name matches your Frec account exactly.
- Select a Full transfer or Partial transfer. If partial transfer, enter the securities and share quantities you'd like to transfer for a partial transfer of assets.
If your brokerage isn't listed
If you don't see your brokerage firm listed, email help@frec.com and we'll help you add it, or assist with the transfer directly.
Getting help with delays or issues
Frec uses ACATS (Automated Customer Account Transfer Service), the same industry-standard system every major brokerage uses, so this isn't a Frec-specific process. If your information doesn't match exactly, or your other firm needs to confirm something on their end, it can add a few extra days. If that happens, or if anything about your transfer looks off, contact help@frec.com; our team can track down the status with our clearing firm directly.
