Account security

Frec protects your account with encryption, SIPC coverage, and 2FA. Learn security best practices, what to do while traveling, and how to report suspicious activity.

Account security

There are several ways we work to keep the personal information you provide us and your Frec account safe.

  • SIPC & excess insurance coverage: Your account is protected under SIPC, plus excess coverage held through our clearing firm, Apex Clearing Corporation. You can learn more in this help center article.
  • Encryption & monitoring: All sensitive information is encrypted both in transit and at rest, and we continuously monitor accounts for unusual or suspicious activity.
  • Automatic logout: For your protection, your session automatically logs out after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Account security best practices

General

  • If you lose your device or need to reach us, contact us at help@frec.com.
  • Never share your password. Frec Support will never ask for your account password, verification codes, or login credentials for your accounts on other trading platforms. If you believe your password or the email associated with your Frec account may have been compromised, we recommend updating your password immediately. See how to change your password.
  • Use a strong, unique password that you don't reuse for any other services or applications. A password manager can help you generate and store unique passwords across multiple services.
  • Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for additional protection on your Frec account. 2FA requires anyone attempting to log into your account to also have access to your personal device for an authorization code.
    • If you're using Google login, your account also benefits from Google's own account authentication protections in addition to Frec's 2FA.
Not receiving your 2FA code?

First, check that your phone number on file is correct and that you have cell signal —codes are sent via SMS. If codes still aren't arriving, try logging in through the app instead of a browser (or vice versa), as this can affect delivery. You can also generate backup codes to use in place of an SMS code: go to Account Settings > Security & Privacy to generate them, and store them somewhere safe in case you lose access to your phone. If you're still stuck, contact us and our team can verify your identity and help restore access.

When traveling

  • Make sure to update your contact information as soon as there is a change or before you travel. If we suspect there might be unauthorized activity in your account, we may contact you.
  • Plan ahead if you’re traveling to a sanctions-restricted jurisdiction. Remember that you may not be able to place trades in your account while you’re in such jurisdiction.
  • Use trusted internet connections while traveling. Public networks, such as those in airports or hotels, may not be protected and could leave your personal and sensitive information exposed.

If you suspect fraudulent activity or unauthorized activity on your Frec account, email help@frec.com and update your account password. Our team can take steps to protect your account and help prevent further fraudulent or unauthorized activity.
